Abstract

Southern Fukien was an important region for China's contact with overseas countries during the Sung and Yuan periods. However, during the T'ang dynasty and even by the time it was under the Min, southern Fukien had not yet transformed its agrarian economy and emerged as a commercially oriented maritime center.
