This research is targeted at developing an open source surveillance system. The University campus is used as a test site. In the campus, there are several locations necessary to be monitored, for examples, elevators, locker rooms, the entrance of the computer rooms and car park, etc. Especially for the locker rooms, they are being malice damage and the properties inside are stolen. In fact, it is impossible for the security guard to monitor the problem locations 24 hours a day. If the properties inside the locker are stolen during the mid-night or holiday, the incident won’t be discovered until the next day and catching the criminal becomes difficult. However, it is not possible to arrange the guards standing everywhere in the campus for the whole day. Therefore, a surveillance system with image storage function is necessary to resolve the above-mentioned problems. The system developed consists of hardware and a software sections. For the hardware section, up to sixteen cameras in the different locations can be connected to the digital video recorder for capturing images and for real time monitoring. Each camera capture channels can be set up for continuous, scheduled or events (such as motion detection or external sensor-infrared, pressure sensor, etc) recording modes. For the software part, in order to keep the budget low while maintaining the highest possible quality, the monitor and control software is developed under the operating system called Gnu-Linux. Linux is a free (under General Public License), stable, memory protected, multi-user and multitasking operating system. Therefore, it is suitable to monitor real time activities and record them for a long time. A prototype system is developed according to the above descriptions. The functions of the proto-type successfully cover: (1) sixteen cameras capturing images simultaneously, (2) real time images capturing and shown by streaming, (3) images recording activated by motion detection, external triggers and schedule setting, (4) a user-friendly platform independent web-based administration and monitoring software bundled with the system.
