AbstractThis paper proposes a novel approach for interactively editing a triangular mesh based on level of detail. By the approach, multiple levels of detail are first generated by using a method of improved progressive mesh to represent the original mesh. Designer then selects a level as an active level and a closed region from this level as an editing area. The idea of this approach in performing an editing operation is to embed the editing area of the active level onto a 2D rectangle and to interpolate each component of the editing information into the rectangle that is then mapped back to the editing area. The editing information at the active level could be automatically propagated onto all the coarser and finer levels. The interaction of the processes described above substantially increases the intuitivity of the editing operation. As a matter of fact, a hierarchical modeling approach is proposed in the paper for the design and implementation of mesh editing systems.
