Abstract

Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) is an interdisciplinary research area, which describes the way computing and networking technologies are incorporated to facilitate cooperation and collaboration over telecommunication networks. This paper presents a CSCW-oriented architectural model. As an extended actor-based model, our architecture synergistically integrates the advantages of client/server model, actor-based model, and layered model. This architecture as well provides a flexible framework to seamlessly integrate different CSCW-related issues, such as control information and resource distribution. In addition, a collaboration description language (CODL) is designed as a high-level description language to facilitate precise definition of a CSCW application adopting our architectural model. This research contributes to the state of the art by emerging software-engineering perspectives into hitherto ad hoc CSCW application development practices. An experimental system, a Collaboration Net, is also presented.
